More Pride in Our People
You’re Such a Tattletale!
What is tattling on your colleague a good thing? When it’s Infection Control Week. The infection control and prevention department recently promoted a reverse tattletale game to highlight the importance of hand hygiene. Susan Clayton’s pain management colleagues observed her washing her hands and tattled by submitting her name for a prize raffle. For her good deed, Clayton’s name was picked from hundreds of others submitted as the grand prize winner of an MP3 player. “Hand hygiene is a Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal – it is the best way to prevent the spread of infection,” says Terry Burger R.N., director, infection control and prevention.

Driver’s Ed? You’re Kidding?
At first, colleagues from engineering, courier services and security had a hard time swallowing the idea of returning to school for driver’s education. But it turned out to be time well spent for almost 200 colleagues who are frequently on the road, including courier Joseph Yudt. Almost all participants gave the “Behind the Wheel” training program high marks for content and instruction. For three months, colleagues spent four hours in the classroom and four hours on the road with instructors reviewing how to navigate our campuses and communities safely.

Caring Abroad
“When an Indian woman recovering from spine surgery put her hand to my heart, I realized we made an impact,” says Holly Tavianini, R.N. (far right), director, 7A. She and orthopedic surgeon Jeffrey McConnell, M.D. (second from left), traveled to India with a team of specialists (l to r: Dave Kelley of equipment supplier MedAlliance Inc., Andrea McAloose, R.N., and Sharon Monahan, C.R.N.A.) to perform free spine-correcting surgeries. McConnell founded Operation Straight Spine, the first charitable project to provide these services to underserved people in India. McConnell and Tavianini plan to return this fall. Operating room nurse Denise Lawyer, R.N., also provided care abroad, traveling to Thailand with Healing the Children and assisting with free cleft lip and other surgeries.

A Little Heart-to-Heart
To celebrate the recent Cardiovascular Week, LVH—Cedar Crest cath lab, electrophysiology lab and staging and recovery employees created theme baskets, which colleagues won by answering trivia questions. They also placed 46 chocolate hearts throughout 46 patient care units, and colleagues throughout the hospital who found them won a gift card. At the week’s end, all cardiovascular colleagues received gift cards.
